Picking a Deep Fry Turkey

Picking out the turkey is always fun and kids love to participate. It's amazing how interested and involved your little helpers will be when they get to be a part of the basics like picking out the turkey. Of course, many children (as well as many adults) always want the biggest turkey they can find! Especially during the holidays, everyone wants the meal to be plentiful. We always imagine great big turkey legs and plenty of white meat for everyone on Thanksgiving Day. It's supposed to be a feast! We certainly understand the appeal to getting a big turkey! With turkey fryers, most are limited to a certain size. The turkey fryer we use (by Brinkman) recommends 10-18lbs. Considering the largest turkey ever recorded (according to the Guinness book of world records) was 86 pounds, some might feel they're limited with an 18 lb bird. When figuring in the number of guests, a good rule is 1.5 pounds per person. Basically, an eighteen pound turkey should feed about 12 people. If you have more than 12 people, don't worry! The great part about deep frying turkey is that it takes about 3.5 minutes per pound so you can knock out an eighteen pound turkey every 63 minutes! If you cook an eighteen pound turkey in the oven, you're looking at cooking the turkey for 4-4.5 hours.
