If safety precautions are not taken, deep frying a turkey can be a disaster. Be careful and take safety precautions and you'll be on your way to have an awesome turkey dinner!
Safety Tips:
1. Do not overheat the oil - most fryers recommend no higher than 325 degrees, some may recommend as high as 350 degrees. However, 325 degrees is plenty to make a perfect turkey.
2. Wear oven mitts when checking, removing or inserting the turkey. The oil is hot and can burn you.
3. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Just in case the oil spills and catches fire, it's a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher on hand. Water will not put out a grease fire.
4. ALWAYS fry the turkey OUTSIDE.
5. Keep children and animals away from the fryer.
6. Make sure the oil has completely cooled before disposing or storing it.
7. Ensure the turkey fryer is in good working condition without any gas leaks.
8. Never look directly into the fryer. Always keep your eyes a safe distance as your eyes will not react well to hot splattering oil.
9. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed before frying. Also, pat it dry. Dry rubs are okay but water and oil don't mix. Dripping water into the turkey fryer will cause more splattering.
10. Take your time, have fun and don't rush anything!
